A good Victron ESS depends on correct sizing: a too-small inverter and the storage won't charge fully; too little storage and the expensive system stutters on every heat-pump start. Our configurator handles the sizing work – you provide PV output, consumption and system goal, the configurator calculates suitable Victron components and delivers a complete quote including economics and EAG subsidy.

What is a Victron ESS system?

ESS stands for Energy Storage System. A Victron ESS connects photovoltaic system, battery storage and home network so that you use solar power during the day, charge surplus into the battery, and discharge it at night. On grid outage the system automatically switches to backup mode and keeps your house powered – without noticeable interruption.

The heart is the MultiPlus II – a bidirectional inverter that converts in both directions: from grid and PV into storage (charging) and from storage back to home (discharge). MultiPlus-II is available in 3, 5, 8, 10 and 15 kVA, single or three-phase. For high household load with heat pump, wall box and large appliances, three MultiPlus II 48/5000 or 48/8000 in three-phase configuration is typical.

The system is complemented by SmartSolar MPPT controllers (feeding PV power into storage), Pytes lithium storage (5.12 kWh modules, freely parallelizable), a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX as control center, and a Lynx Distributor as DC distributor. The configurator assembles these components automatically.

Which components belong in a Victron ESS?

MultiPlus II – the inverter

The central element. Available in 5 power levels (3, 5, 8, 10, 15 kVA). For a typical single-family home with heat pump and wall box, three MultiPlus II 48/5000 in three-phase configuration are recommended – giving 15 kW continuous and 30 kW peak. For smaller systems without heat pump, a single 48/5000 is often enough. Important: MultiPlus II is black-start-capable – the system restarts even after weeks of grid outage without external power.

SmartSolar MPPT – the PV interface

Converts PV voltage (typically 60-450 V open circuit) down to 48 V battery voltage. Correct MPPT size depends on PV power per string. SmartSolar 250/100 is the most common all-rounder. For very large systems above 15 kWp the RS 450/100 or RS 450/200 is suitable with higher input voltages and more trackers. The configurator picks the right size and count automatically.

Pytes – the battery storage

Pytes V5, V5 H+ and TE+ are 5.12-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) modules at 48 V. Directly compatible with Victron systems and freely parallelizable. Each module has 6,000 full cycles guarantee (more than 20 years of daily use), 10 years manufacturer warranty. Minimum module count is determined by the configurator from your maximum charge/discharge current – too few modules would throttle the inverters.

Cerbo GX – the control center

Controls the whole system and enables cloud monitoring via VRM portal. Available in two variants: Cerbo GX (compact, no display) and Ekrano GX (with 5-inch or 7-inch touch display for on-site operation). Without control center an ESS system doesn't work – it's mandatory, not accessory.

Lynx Distributor – the DC distribution

Aggregates all DC connections (inverter, MPPTs, storage) centrally with Mega-Fuse protection. 4 inputs per Lynx Distributor – larger systems use 2 or 3 Lynx units in series. The configurator calculates the count automatically.

Single-phase or three-phase – what fits me?

The answer depends on your household connection and your large consumers. A single-phase system with one MultiPlus II is enough for small installations, rental apartments or off-grid cabins. It is significantly cheaper and faster to install.

However, as soon as you have a heat pump (typically three-phase), an 11 kW or 22 kW wall box, a 400 V cooker or other large consumers, you need a three-phase system with three MultiPlus II. Only then are all phases covered and large appliances can run in backup mode too. In Austria three-phase is standard for new buildings.

Rule of thumb: PV under 5 kWp and no three-phase large consumer → single-phase is enough. PV above 5 kWp or heat pump/wall box → plan three-phase. When in doubt: three-phase is future-proof, large consumers can be retrofitted later.

How many Pytes storage modules do I need?

Minimum module count is not derived from energy demand but from maximum charge/discharge current. Each Pytes V5 supports 70 A charge/discharge. With three MultiPlus II 48/5000 delivering 210 A combined charge current, three modules would be required mathematically – plus 1.2 safety factor that's four modules minimum.

Bigger always works: four modules is the minimum, six or eight increase usable capacity and reduce load per module (extending lifespan). Rule of thumb for homes: 5 kWh per person – so 20 kWh = four modules for a family of four. With heat pump + wall box rather 25-30 kWh.

Special case off-grid: those operating completely independent should choose double the minimum recommendation. Reason: in off-grid mode the system runs at constant higher load (no grid buffering), lifespan would otherwise be reduced.

2026 EAG subsidy – what's available?

For PV systems in Austria there's the EAG investment grant 2026 in four categories. Up to 10 kWp system size: fixed 150 EUR/kWp (Category A), 10-20 kWp also 150 EUR/kWp (Category B). 20-100 kWp runs in competitive procedure with max. 130 EUR/kWp (Category C), above that Category D also 130 EUR/kWp max.

Battery storage is additionally subsidized with up to 150 EUR/kWh – coupled to the PV grant. Example 10 kWp with 20 kWh Pytes: 1,500 EUR PV + 3,000 EUR storage = 4,500 EUR grant. Three subsidy calls 2026: April 23 - May 11, June 16-30, October 8-22.

Important: since April 1, 2025 the normal VAT (20%) applies again to PV systems – the 2024 zero rate is gone. But the EAG subsidy was substantially raised, so effective savings remain comparable.

Tax interesting: for systems up to 35 kWp peak power and 25 kVA connection, income from grid feed-in up to 12,500 kWh per year is income tax free. Self-consumed solar electricity is generally exempt from electricity tax.

5 common mistakes in Victron ESS planning

  1. Inverter undersized. With a single-phase MultiPlus II 48/5000 (4,000 W continuous), the system collapses under a heat pump startup (up to 7 kW inrush). Three MultiPlus II 48/5000 in three-phase have 12 kW continuous + 24 kW peak – handles large inrush peaks.
  2. Storage chosen too small. Planning only two Pytes modules because they mathematically suffice throttles your system: inverters charge at full power, the small storage can't absorb it, energy goes to grid. Minimum count from charge/discharge balance is mandatory.
  3. No energy meter with AC-coupled Fronius. Combining an existing Fronius inverter with Victron ESS strictly requires an energy meter (VM-3P75CT or EM540). Without it the ESS can't measure feed-in and the frequency-shift mechanism for full storage doesn't work.
  4. Lynx distributor undersized. 4 inputs per Lynx Distributor 1000A. A larger system with three MultiPlus II 48/8000 (2 connections each), five MPPTs and five Pytes needs 16 inputs – so 4 Lynx Distributors. Planning only one means lots of extra cabling later.
  5. Wrong Mega-Fuse selection. DC fuses at the Lynx must match cable current capacity, not device output. With MultiPlus II 48/8000 using 2x 50 mm² cables, current splits across both poles – per connection a 125 A fuse suffices, not 200 A.

Frequently asked questions about Victron ESS

How long does configuration take?

With our configurator you're done in 3 to 5 minutes. You provide location, roof shape, module count and system goal – the system automatically suggests suitable Victron components. Then you can download the result as PDF.

What does a Victron ESS system cost?

For a typical single-family home with 10 kWp PV and 20 kWh Pytes storage (three-phase, MultiPlus II 48/5000), material costs are around 20,000-25,000 EUR net. Larger systems above 15 kWp rather 30,000-40,000 EUR. Exact prices the configurator shows after entering system data.

Do I need Quattro instead of MultiPlus for backup?

For pure backup function the MultiPlus II is fully sufficient – on grid outage it automatically switches to island mode. You only need Quattro-II if you additionally want to connect a backup generator (for long dark periods in winter or as redundancy for heat-pump homes).

Can I keep an existing Fronius inverter?

Yes, Victron ESS combines with Fronius (or other AC inverters) – AC-coupled at home grid or at MultiPlus AC-out. Important: with AC coupling at MultiPlus output the 1:1 rule applies (Fronius power <= Multi power). Energy meter (VM-3P75CT) mandatory.

How does the warranty work?

Victron MultiPlus II + SmartSolar MPPT: 5 years manufacturer warranty standard, optionally extendable to 10 years. Pytes storage: 10 years or 6,000 full cycles (whichever comes first). Cerbo GX and Lynx Distributor: 5 years. All warranties valid worldwide and handled directly by manufacturer.

Can I expand later?

Yes, Victron systems are modular. You can later add more Pytes storage (parallel on same DC rail), add more MPPTs or switch to larger inverters with growing PV. Cerbo GX detects new components automatically.

How economical is the system?

At current electricity prices (29 cent/kWh in Austria 2026) and feed-in (about 7 cent/kWh) a typical 10 kWp system with storage amortizes in 9 to 12 years. With 25-30 years lifespan this is good leverage. Over 20 years profit is 15,000-25,000 EUR (depending on price increase).

What subsidies are available?

EAG investment grant 2026: up to 10 kWp = 150 EUR/kWp fixed, 10-20 kWp = 150 EUR/kWp fixed, 20-100 kWp = up to 130 EUR/kWp in competition. Battery storage additionally up to 150 EUR/kWh. Application via OeMAG in three subsidy calls per year (April, June, October).

What happens after configuration?

After configuration in the wizard you receive a complete quote with detail bill of materials, economic analysis and EAG subsidy as PDF. You can download it directly, discuss with family or show your tax advisor.

If the quote fits, click 'Request quote' and we'll contact you. On order confirmation you also get complete system planning with wiring diagram, module layout and all component data sheets for insurance and subsidy application.
