How to plan a photovoltaic system in 7 steps

  1. 1Enter location. Capture postal code, federal state and altitude. Snow and wind loads are automatically calculated per ÖNORM B 1991.
  2. 2Capture building and roof. Enter roof shape (gable, mono-pitched, hip, flat), roofing (tile, plain tile, trapezoidal sheet, standing seam, fiber cement) and dimensions. Optional: rafter spacing and load for structural check.
  3. 3Select module. Choose solar module from database or enter custom data (power, dimensions, Voc, Vmpp, Isc, Impp).
  4. 4Placement and structural check. Place modules on the roof (portrait or landscape). Structural verification per ÖNORM with snow, wind and dead loads is calculated automatically.
  5. 5Configure Victron ESS. Have inverter (MultiPlus II, Quattro), battery (Pytes V5, V5 H+) and monitoring (Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX) sized automatically or adjust manually.
  6. 6Select accessories. Add cables, connectors, fuses, smart meter and other accessories.
  7. 7Receive bill of materials. Download complete bill of materials with all components, prices, structural PDF and 3D visualization or forward directly to ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What size should my PV system have?

Rule of thumb: 1.5 to 2 kWp installed capacity per 1,000 kWh annual consumption. A 4-person household with 4,500 kWh needs about 7-9 kWp. More with heat pump or EV. The PV planner calculates the optimal size automatically.

What does a photovoltaic system cost in Austria 2026?

An 8-10 kWp system with battery storage costs between EUR 14,000 and 22,000 net (incl. installation). Exact costs depend on module, inverter, storage size and roof. The configurator shows an updated bill of materials with prices after each step.

Do I need a building permit for a PV system?

In Austria, roof-parallel PV systems on existing buildings are usually exempt from notification or permit (details vary by federal state). Elevated systems, flat-roof mounting or listed buildings have special rules. Clarify requirements with your municipality.

When does a PV system pay off?

At current Austrian electricity prices (approx. 28-32 ct/kWh) and a self-consumption rate of 60-70 % with storage, a typical system pays off in 8-13 years. Modules have a 25-year performance warranty - the remaining lifetime produces practically free electricity.

How big should the battery storage be?

HTW Berlin rule of thumb: about 1 to 1.5 kWh usable capacity per 1,000 kWh annual consumption. A 4-person household with 4,500 kWh typically gets by with 5-7 kWh storage. Larger storage does not increase self-consumption proportionally.

What is the difference between hybrid and off-grid inverters?

Hybrid inverters are grid-coupled and can feed in, but typically cannot continue operating during grid failure. Off-grid inverters (like Victron MultiPlus II or Quattro) can run in island mode and offer true emergency power with <20 ms transfer time.

What is the feed-in tariff in Austria 2026?

OeMAG currently pays between 5 and 9 ct/kWh for fed-in solar power (monthly adjusted to market price). Self-consumption (savings of approx. 28-32 ct/kWh) is therefore three to five times more valuable than feeding in. Larger storage = higher profitability.

Can I install the PV system myself (DIY)?

Mechanical installation (substructure, modules) is permitted for private individuals in Austria. The electrical connection to the house grid and registration with the grid operator MUST be carried out by a licensed electrician. Greenfuture offers both complete installation and DIY material.
